It served primarily the direct connection of the two major marshalling yards Hamm ( Westphalia ) and ( Oberhausen ) Osterfeld Süd for long-term passage freight trains with wide area bypass of the Ruhr and the connection of new coal mines in the railway network. Each of the stations was terminal or transfer station for one or more of more than fifteen mines. The second track was added in 1912.

The passenger was designed always weak, despite several major cities along the route, the train stations, however, were created partly far away from the town centers due to the predominant purpose of the line for freight traffic. It was on her despite duality and the main train status never planned long-distance passenger traffic. The entire line was electrified in 1967. The passenger was in the section Hamm ( Westphalia ) Gelsenkirchen- Buer Nord set on 29 May 1983. Occasionally, however, the distance between Hamm ( Westphalia ) / Hamm Rbf and branch point Horstmar as a detour route for passenger trains (RE, IC, ICE ) is the main route Hamm - Dortmund used.

There is no drive through passenger trains more of ( holders - ) Gelsenkirchen- Buer Nord to Oberhausen; Passengers are therefore always forced for this relation to change in Gladbeck or Bottrop.

For rail freight, the Hamm- Osterfelder track, despite its decline still in its entire length is important. However, at times consisted east of Gelsenkirchen- Buer Nord weekend from Saturday afternoon to Monday morning shut-down. Reason for the shut-down, the fall in freight and savings in personnel costs for the signal boxes on the weekend.
