Oboe da caccia

The oboe da caccia or Jagdoboe is a woodwind instrument and a deeper subspecies of the Baroque in alto range. The oboe da caccia is tuned in F, so sounds a perfect fifth lower than the oboe.

It goes back to the Leipzig woodwind instrument maker Johann Eichentopf. The two received from him since - caccia - instruments ( in museums to Stockholm and Copenhagen) but are no longer playable. The oboe da caccia is curved, covered with leather and has a ( at Eichentopf ) inside black painted brass bell, like the hunting horn ( corno da caccia ), whence probably the part of the name comes da caccia.

The oboe da caccia is used in the Passions, cantatas and some in the Christmas Oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach. Other composers for oboe da caccia are Johann Friedrich Fasch, Johann Christoph Graupner and Giovanni Battista Ferrandini. It was later developed into the English horn, which is often used today as a substitute for the rare encountered oboe da caccia.
