Shipbuilding

The official keel laying of the ship started in sectional construction took place on 19 October 1987. On August 25, 1988, the ship was christened with the name Oden and left two days later to water. The Oden was the last ship in the shipyard Arendal ( Arendalsvarvet ) in Gothenburg, before the production of new ships were decommissioned.

Construction

Generally

The ship is different from other icebreakers primarily by the fact that it at the bow is slightly wider than the rear. The breaking of ice wash 12 mouthpieces large amounts of water against the bow. In this way the hull is lubricated and flushed away pieces of ice. This flushing system is operated by two centrifugal pumps each of which has a capacity of 9000 m3 / h. The Oden has no offshore boat propellers, but the water wash can also be used as a water jet propulsion.

In contrast to most state-owned Swedish icebreaker Oden does not have the diesel-electric drive, but four pure diesel engines. All four engines by the Polish producer Zaklady Urzadzen Technicznych " ZGODA " SA are manufactured under license from Sulzer and have eight cylinders with a capacity of 4.5 MW. There are four auxiliary engines with six cylinders of the same brand. In addition, the Oden has two steam boilers for heating up.

Equipment

The living area has a high facilities with toilets and showers in all cabins. The officers' cabins have to separate bedrooms. More Ausstaffierungen are a gym, sauna and health department pharmacy. A system of containers provides space for laboratories, offices and warehouse stock.

Since the Oden was classified as a warship during construction, they received four cannon ports that are intended for 40 - mm Bofors guns. With these it was never stocked.

Through an agreement between the Authority and the Swedish Sjöfartsverket Polar Research Secretariat, the Oden is now in summer and winter as a research vessel active. In the northern winter, the Oden works at the U.S. McMurdo research station in Antarctica. With the 2009/10 season she was four winter behind the other at this point.
