Oder–Havel Canal

The Oder - Havel Canal ( OHK ) in the state of Brandenburg is a section of the federal waterway Havel - Oder Waterway ( HOW) and connects the Havel south Oranienburg with the Oder attitude of HOW in Niederfinow with a length of 54 kilometers. Responsible for managing the Water and Shipping Authority Eberswalde.

The OHK runs through the Lehnitzsee, essentially follows the course of the previous Malzer channel and replaced the Finowkanal with its many locks. From Lehnitzstraße to Niederfinow it forms the summit level of the HOW. For water supply the summit level the natural resources of the catchment areas of the rivers Havel and the Werbelliner waters are used. The inflow from the upper Havel is amplified through the Müritz -Havel waterway from the Eldegebiet ( Mecklenburg Upper Lakes ).

The leg was put into operation with the opening of large navigable waterway Berlin -Stettin of Plotzensee / Spandau Hohensaaten on the Oder on June 17, 1914 by Kaiser Wilhelm II, who gave the name Hohenzollernkanal this waterway connection. Time, the channel also major shipping canal or Großschiffahrtsweg was called.

After 1945 the name Hohenzollernkanal from Niederneuendorfer lake at Hennig village was to Hohensaaten replaced by the name Oder- Havel Canal (during in Berlin (West ), this section of the official name of Berlin- Spandau Ship Canal received ). The Federal Waterways Act, as amended in 1998 followed the stipulations of DIN 4054 in September 1977 canalised river reaches no more than " channeled " or to refer to as a "channel ". Therefore, the canalised Havel distance ( as from the Spree River estuary ) from Niederneuendorfer Lake to the confluence of the Old Oranienburger Havel in Hohen Neuendorf the name Spandau Havel ( as before 1914 ) and the route south to the junction of the upper part of the Oranienburger Havel Oranienburg has the designation Oranienburger Havel; the canalised route Niederfinow - Hohensaaten is named Or Berger waters ( as before 1914 ).

The channel has the following technical features: From the good 47 -mile summit level there are over 25 km as a seal stretch where the canal water level is higher than the surrounding terrain. In order to limit damage in the surrounding area at a dam ( water gate ) are installed on Pechteich and Eberswalde security gates. A third security gate at Lichterfelde ( Schorfheide ) was removed without replacement during the construction of the Lichterfelder road bridge. In Eberswalde led a Built in 1910, water-carrying channel bridge over the railway line Berlin -Stettin. As part of the channel upgrade the canal bridge was demolished in 2007 and replaced about 250 meters to the north through a tunnel structure. The up to 28 -meter-high dam Ragöser ( long time the world's tallest dam channel, still one of the highest ) crosses the Ragöser flow by means of a passage. A masterpiece is the built 1927-1934 Ship Niederfinow with a height of 36 meters ( for the construction of the world's greatest height difference at a case level for shipping ). It replaced the 1934 right up to 1972 ready reproached lock staircase Niederfinow. Currently, a new boat lift north of the existing built.

The end of 2010 the railway bridge in the Heidekrautbahn was raised over the Oder- Havel Canal in the disused stretch in the cross-fold by 50 centimeters to improve headroom for shipping. This allows laughed asten westward two layers of container cargo ships as they travel. This means a payload of 96 additional containers with the largest approved type of ship.
