Odilon Polleunis

Odilon " Lon " Polleunis ( born May 1, 1943 in Sint- Truiden ) is a former Belgian footballer, who later became involved as a football coach. He is the son of Antoine " Toon " Polleunis ( b. 1921 ) and the nephew of Theodore " Dore " Polleunis ( 1917-1996 ), which were once also active as a football player (also as a striker ), but both only a very few inserts brought in the highest Belgian league.

Career

From 1962 to 1973 he played for VV St. Truiden. In 1973, he worked for three years in RWD Molenbeek, with whom he each season participated in a European competition and 1975 Belgian Champion. In the 1976/77 season he played for KSK Tongeren in the second Belgian league. He was honored as a Belgian footballer of the year with the Golden Boot in 1968.

Polleunis played in a total of 29 convocations 22 caps for the Belgian national team, where he scored ten goals. He made his debut on April 7, 1968 in a 2-1 victory for the Belgians in the friendly against the Netherlands in Amsterdam, where he also scored his first goal for the national team. In the qualifying matches for the 1970 World Cup, he scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 against Finland and two goals in a 3-0 win over Yugoslavia.

In 1970 he was in the squad for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, where he was employed in two games. In the 1972 European Championship on home soil, he scored in the semi-final against eventual winners Germany the deficit to 1:2 draw.
