Grey Green beetle leg ( Oedemera virescens)

The apparent longhorn beetle, beetle leg or Engdeckenkäfer ( Oedemeridae ) are a family of beetles. They are found worldwide with about 1,500 species. In Europe, 122 species and sub- species occur in Central Europe there are about 30 species.

Features

The beetles vary in body length 5-22 mm. You see longhorn beetles similar and have an equally elongated body which is chitinized but soft and not so strong. They are mostly yellow and black, or colored metallic green, green, blue or black blue. The pronotum, which is significantly narrower than the elytra is, in some species, though different in color than the rest of the body, and may differ from each other in both males and females. The wing covers are ribbed in some species back apart and gaping in many species. The sensors are usually filiform and have 11 members. Rarely, there are ways in which they are cut, some males also have 12 antennal segments. The compound eyes are usually indented by the probe steering systems. The long and weak legs have front and center 5 Tarsenglieder, behind only four. Here, the first Tarsenglied is long and usually one or two members have lobed extensions on. The legs ( coxae ) are thickened club-shaped in the males of many species.

Occurrence

The animals are found worldwide. They live in forests and at the edges, on meadows and in gardens and often sit on flowers of shrubs and herbaceous plants.

Way of life

The adults feed on pollen. Some be attracted by artificial light at night. The larvae develop in all types of wood or dry stems of herbaceous plants. There are species that can even live in driftwood. The animals hibernate as a doll in the doll cradle.
