Ogatsu, Miyagi

Ogatsu (Japanese雄 胜 町, -chō ) was a town in the district Monou in the Japanese prefecture of Miyagi.

Geography

Ogatsu lies along the small, narrow Ogatsu Bay (雄 胜 湾, Ogatsu - wan) on the Pacific coast of Japan, with the central district of Ogatsu located at the northern end of the bay.

History

The church was built during the construction of the modern Japanese community being on April 1, 1889 from the administrative grouping of 12 villages - Ogatsuhama (雄 胜 浜 村, -mura ), Myōjinhama (明 神 浜 村, -mura ), Naburihama (名 振 浜 村, -mura ), Funakoshihama (船 越 浜 村, -mura ), Ōsuhama (大 须 浜 村, -mura ), Kumazawahama (熊 沢 浜 村, -mura ), Wakuhama (桑 浜 村, -mura ), Tachihama (立 浜 村, -mura ), Ohama (大 浜 村, -mura ), Ojimahama (小岛 浜 村, -mura ), Mizuhama (水 浜 村, -mura ) and Wakahame (分 浜 村, -mura ) - the village community Jūgohama (十五 浜 村, -mura, literally: " 15 beaches " ). On April 1, 1941, the appointment of the town ( chō ) and, consequently renamed Ogatsu was.

On 1 April 2005 the municipality with the old independent city of Ishinomaki was, as well as the county's cities Monou, Kanan, Kahoku, Kitakami from the same district Monou and Oshika Oshika from the district to the new city of Ishinomaki. This led to the dissolution of the district Monou.

Ogatsu was severely affected by the Tohoku earthquake and subsequent tsunami on 11 March 2011. 280 people are on the official lists of victims of the tsunami dead, another tsunami victims had to wait days for a rescue.

Traffic

The most important trunk road is the National Road 398 according to ( the old ) and Ishinomaki Yurihonjo. A connection to the rail network does not exist.

Economy

The place is known in Japan for its grinding stones for ink and formerly held annually Scallop Festival.

The fishing site Ogatsu had about 280 fishermen. Furthermore, was the cultivation of oysters and scallops of economic importance. All harvests and catches were sold through cooperatives to intermediate and wholesalers.

A fishing cooperative founded after the tsunami with about 2000 associates and 25 fishermen named OH! Guts! ( freely translated: Ogatsu has courage ). The cooperative hopes to be able to distribute through direct selling surpluses to shareholders. This should be achieved by fishing with the 10 remaining boats and by the income from the harvest of scallops and later from the harvest of oysters.

Education

In Ogatsu were the primary schools (雄 胜 町 立X小学校, Ogatsu - chōritsu X shōgakkō ) OSU, Funakoshi and Ogatsu, and the middle schools (雄 胜 町 立中 学校X, Ogatsu - chōritsu X chūgakkō ) OSU and Ogatsu.
