The Oklahoma State University - Stillwater (also called OSU ) is a public university in Stillwater in the north of the U.S. state of Oklahoma. The University has 23 307 students with the second largest public university according to the University of Oklahoma. It is the main site of the Oklahoma State University system. The university is known for its research and teaching in the fields of architecture, agriculture, engineering and veterinary medicine.

History

The University was founded on 24 December 1890 as Oklahoma Territorial Agricultural and Mechanical (A & M) College. The college was established in the then district Payne. The vague term " territorial " College led to rivalries between cities in Payne. With the attainment of statehood, the word "territorial " was finally removed in 1907 from the title. The present name was given the University 1957.

The first students visited the University on 14 December 1891. Classes were held for two and a half years in local churches until finally the first academic building, later known as Old Central, was opened on 15 June 1894. In 1896 the first graduation ceremony with six male graduates followed.

A large contribution to the growth of OAMC, the then headmaster Henry G. Bennet, who was involved in the College 1928-1950. Dr. Bennet had great visions for the college already during his tenure. One of its main aspects for the growth of the college was opening an own library for the university. This vision was in 1953 with the opening of the Edmon Low Library reality.

In 2005, 48% of the student body women and 52 % men. 77% of students came from Oklahoma, approximately 14% from other states and 9 % come from abroad. Ethnically, the student shaft was composed as follows:

  • 1.89% Hispanics
  • 1.65 % Asian

Sports

The sports team of OSU, the Oklahoma State Cowboys and cowgirls. The mascot is a cowboy named Pistol Pete. The university is a member of the Big 12 Conference in the South Division. Acting Director of Sport is Mike Holder. Overall, the Oklahoma State University 48 national championships won. Thus, the OSU has won the fourth most national titles in the country.
