Olavi Mannonen

Olavi Aleksanteri Mannonen ( born March 7, 1930 in Vyborg ) is a former Finnish Modern pentathlete.

Mannonen grew up in a family with two brothers and a sister in the then Finnish Viipuri ( Vyborg today ) on. His mother worked in a restaurant. On 6 December 1939, the family was evacuated during the Soviet-Finnish Winter War of Viipuri and spent some time in Jämsä. As of 1942, she then lived in Helsinki. Mannonen originally learned the profession of an electrician, he also exercised until 1951. He then moved to the mounted police of Helsinki and in 1971 their chief of police. In 1990, he finally retired. Mannonen is married and has two daughters.

1945 learned Mannonen Tauno Jorasmaan know who brought him to the sport and took up a sports club with private beach. Mannonen quickly established himself as a strong swimmer out and won some national competitions. In 1952, he joined the Modern Pentathlon at the Olympic Games in Helsinki and was in the team competition, together with Lauri Vilkko and Olavi Rokka third parties. In the subsequent Games in Melbourne, he won silver in singles and also received a bronze medal in the team competition with Väinö Korhonen and Berndt Katter.

After ending his active sports career was Mannonen including in the presidency of the Suomen Poliisin Urheiluliitto ( SPUL ), the Finnish Police Sports Association, and was involved as a director at Suomen Nykyaikaisen 5 - ottelun Liitto, the Finnish Association of the modern pentathlon. He was also from 1978 to 1990 a member of the European Police Sports Association ( USPE ).
