Old Dominion Barn Dance

The Old Dominion Barn Dance was an American country music program, which was sent from the radio station WRVA out of Richmond, Virginia.

History

The Old Dominion Barn Dance was broadcast for the first time on the evening of September 19, 1946 live from the WRVA Theater in Richmond on WRVA. Sunshine Sue, then for six years at WRVA, acted as moderator and introduced already for the first show of Mother Maybelle & the Carter Sisters. First, the shows were held during the week in the afternoon, from 1947 you moved the barn dance but on Saturday nights. At this time you could WRVA on the entire east coast of the United States to hear. The show turned out in the first year a success out; we always played at a packed auditorium that could hold 1400 spectators, and over 100,000 people already had the Old Dominion Barn Dance seen them live in December 1947.

Rise

1950 joined the ensemble of a Barn Dances over 100 musicians, including nationally known artists such as Grandpa Jones, Joe Maphis and Rose Lee Maphis, Chick Stripling, Toby Stroud and Jackie Phelps. Now, the Columbia Broadcasting System took over the transmission across the U.S. and the Old Dominion Barn Dance rose to become one of the most sought after Barn Dance shows in the country. Sunshine Sue and the head WRVAs, John Tansey, had worked hard to establish the show firmly in the national country music scene.

For soldiers overseas shows were recorded and broadcast on AFN in the weekly change with the Old Kentucky Barn Dance, the Big D Jamboree and Louisiana Hayride in the Germany. The Radio album drew the Old Dominion Barn Dance at the time of an award for Outstanding Contribution To American Folk Music in radio and theater Entertainement. At this time, the show was at the height of their success. Rockabilly star Janis Martin found her breakthrough in 1955 Barn Dance and other country stars such as Lester Flatt, Barbara Allen, Wilma Lee & Stoney Cooper, Reno and Smiley, Mac Wiseman, and many more could be gained for the shows.

End

In 1957, the Old Dominion Barn Dance was deposed and replaced by the New Dominion Barn Dance. Carlton Haney now acted as moderator and introduced the show until 1964 WRVA continued.

In 1975, the Old Dominion Barn Dance was again revived on WTVR WTVR and TV. Among the guests were Grandpa Jones, Joe Maphis and Sunshine Sue, Jr. It was also founded a record label, with whom you wanted to take young talents of the Barn Dances under contract.

In the present, the tradition of the Old Dominion Barn Dance Foundation For The Performing Arts was founded to commemorate and conservation.
