Old Master

The term old master the most outstanding artists of the paintings from the 14th to the 18th century and their works are summarized in the art. During this period, particularly figurative art created with initially almost exclusively religious, but later also worldly motives.

General historical artists of all eras are referred to as master, in other areas of art, especially when their names are not known (see Notname and list of Notnamen ). In this sense one can speak, for example, of the "old masters of Greek temple building ".
