Old Orchard Shoal Light

Old Orchard Shoal Light is a lighthouse in the Lower New York Bay, with a shoal is marked. The building was put into operation on 25 April 1893. On 20 September 2006, the building on the National Register of Historic Places was recorded. In addition, the Old Orchard Shoal Light is guided in the Maritime Heritage Program of the National Park Service as watchable lighthouse.

The lighthouse, built in 1893 is located about 5.5 km south of the New Dorp Beach on Gedney Channel in the Lower New York Bay on a 0.72 -acre property, which is washed over by the tide. The tower is 35 feet ( 10.5 m) high structure made of cast iron, which on three floors includes about 90 square meter apartment inside the lighthouse keeper. Inside, the walls are lined up to the third floor with bricks. The Fresnel lens was removed in 1950.

Frank Schubert, who should have been the last civilian lighthouse keeper in the United States, was stationed here before he was finally transferred to Governors Iceland and Coney Iceland Light.

On 29 May 2007 decided the Secretary of the Interior that the Old Orchard Shoal Light Station was Committee under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000.

There was no group that is able to and was ready to get the building on the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act. Therefore, the General Services Administration, Old Orchard Shoal Light offered from June 2008 up for sale by auction. It was slammed on 27 August 2008 for $ 235,000.
