Ole Edvart Rølvaag

Ole Edvart Rolvaag ( Ole Edvart Rølvåg, born April 22, 1876 in Dønna; † November 5, 1931 ) was a Norwegian- American writer.

Rolvaag came from a fishing and seafaring family and herself worked as a fisherman before he moved in 1896 to the United States, where he lived on the farm of an uncle in Elk Point. He attended Augustana College and, from 1901, the St. Olaf 's College, where he became in 1905 the degree of Bachelor. He then spent a year studying at the University of Oslo.

After his return to the U.S. he taught Norwegian language and literature at St. Olaf 's College. In 1908 he became an American citizen. In 1912 came his first book in Norwegian America Breve ( Letters from America). 1924 and 1925, the novels I de other hand appeared and Riket gundlæges on a Norwegian immigrant Per Hansa. His translation of both works into English was published in 1927 under the title of Giants in the Earth.

Giants in the Earth was set to music in the processing of Arnold Sundgaard 1951 by Douglas Moore. The work was also the first volume of a large-scale trilogy about the life of Norwegian pioneers in the northwestern United States. The second volume Peder Victorius published in 1929, the third Their Father 's God 1931.

His son was the Governor of Minnesota Karl Rolvaag.
