Ole Irgens (bishop)

Biography

Ole Irgens was the son of the Vicar Johannes Irgens from the ancient family of Irgens. After a short time he began to study under his father to work as a chaplain. In 1756, he left him to become a preacher ship in Morocco. But according to various problems he came to be in 1760 to Norway to Vicar of Fåberg. In 1773 he became vicar of Trondheim Nidaros Cathedral and provost in the diocese of Trondheim. From 1773 to 1780 was vice president of Irgens Kongelige Norske Videnskabers Selskab. In 1779 he was elected bishop of Bergen. This office he led in spite of his blindness in the last five years of life until his death in 1803 continued.
