Olive Nicol, Baroness Nicol

Olive Mary Wendy Nicol, Baroness Nicol, ( born March 21, 1923) is a British politician of the Labour and Co-operative Party.

Life and career

Nicol was born on 21 March 1923 as the daughter of James and Harriet Rowe -Hunter. She attended school in Cahir Ireland. From 1942 to 1944 she was managing principal secretary of the Inland Revenue and the Inspector of the Admiralty from 1944 to 1948.

From 1972 to 1986 she was a judge at the Cambridge Peace Bench. She was a member of the Board of Directors (Board ) of the Co-operative Wholesale Society from 1976 to 1985 and President from 1981.

From 1972 to 1982 she was Councillor of the Cambridge City Council. In 1974 she was Deputy Mayor ( Deputy Mayor ).

Nicol was from 1976 to 1978 member of the Supplementary Benefits Tribunal. From 1978 to 1981 she was a member of the Careers Service Consultative Panel.

Membership in the House of Lords

Nicol was appointed on January 20, 1983 Life Peer as Baroness Nicol, of Newnham in the County of Cambridge. Your inaugural speech in the House of Lords held on 7 February 1983.

From 1983 to 1989 she was Whip of the opposition and Baroness in Waiting and Deputy Speaker and Deputy Chair of Committee at 1995 to 2002. Nicol was a member of the Lord Chancellor 's Advisory Committee from 1982 to 1988 and the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology ( POST) of 1998 to 2000. Between 1983 and 1987 she was Whip of the opposition and 1987-1989 opposition Deputy Chief Whip. From 1988 to 1989 she was the opposition spokesperson on energy. From 1983 to 1992 she was Opposition Spokesperson for Green issues. She was president ( chairman ) of the All- Party Retail Group.

They belonged to the following Select Committees: 1986-1991 European Communities, Science and Technology from 1990 to 1993, Europe 1990 to 1996 as well as the Environment and Social Affairs Sub - Committee. In addition, Nicol was in Scientific Procedures 2001 to 2002, the Science and Technology Sub-Committee on Management of Nuclear Waste from 1998 to 1999 and the Ecclesiastical Committee from 1990 to 1996 in the committees Sustainable Development 1994-1995, Use of Animals.

On 5 July 2004, she announced at last to speak. Most recently, she took part in a referendum on 27 June 2006.

Family

She is married to Alexander Douglas Ian Nicol since 1947. Together they have two sons and a daughter.

Honors

She is an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Waste Management. In 1990 she became a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
