Oluf Braren

Oluf Braren (* February 25, 1787 in Oldsum, † March 22, 1839 in Toftum ) is a representative of naive painting. Some of the works of this painter laity show a close relationship with its North Frisian homeland.

Life

Oluf Braren was born in Oldsum auf Foehr in North Frisia. His father was a blacksmith and farmer. At the age of 19 he became a teacher on the island of Sylt, having the necessary knowledge - acquired through self-study - as well as the painting. His nephew Brar C. Braren writes in his memoirs about Oluf Braren: " ... because other teachers he has never had as books .... How the educated of his time he was a rationalist. " On September 25, 1808, he married the Sylt Island, meete, born William. In addition to the painting itself Braren dealt with the study of nature and put on an extensive natural history collection.

Around 1810, the couple moved after Utersum over on Foehr; Braren worked there as a teacher. He began a love affair with Ing Peter Matzen from the neighboring village Hedehusum. This relationship was about seven years and produced two children while Brarens marriage remained childless with meete. Braren lost his job as the ratio became public and moved to Toftum, where he worked as an assistant teacher in a poor family.

Ing Peter Matzen brother Peter Matthiesen acquisitions was friends with Braren and took painting and drawing lessons from him. As it turned out a special talent of Peter Matthiesen, this was around 1818 to Eutin to study with Wilhelm Tischbein. Oluf Braren accompanied his former student there and was proven to be one week at Tischbein in Eutin. He was at least indirectly influenced by Tischbein's art, which is expressed in Brarens subsequent works.

Reception

During his lifetime Braren remained largely unknown and his paintings were little appreciated. Been distributed yet as 1897, the estate of his nephew Jürgen Braren, is narrated that the relationship was a microscope preference over three paintings by Oluf Braren. Only in the 20th century, learned his work a great appreciation.
