Olympic Committee of Portugal

The Comité Olímpico de Portugal ( COP) is the National Olympic Committee in Portugal.

History

Since 1906, the International Olympic Committee (IOC ) was represented by Dr. D. António de Lencastre in Portugal, but it was only on 26 October 1909, the COP was founded, and still recognized in the same year by the IOC. Portugal was thus the 13th country, which joined the Olympic spirit with a NOK.

The first president was Dr. Jaime Santos Mauperrin. He was previously Chairman of the Sociedade Promotora de Educação Física Nacional (English about: National Association for the Advancement of Physical Education ), from which the COP was born.

The COP organized the official participation of Portugal in the next Olympic Games, the Summer Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912. The subsequent preparations for the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1916 were canceled due to the outbreak of the First World War.

The Law of 14 August 1919, the government of the young republic Portugal recognized ( since 1910 ) to the COP and granted him government grants.

Since inception, the COP organized the Portuguese participation in all Olympics.
