Omakau

P1

Omakau is a place in the Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand. It belongs to Central Otago and lies about 23 kilometers northeast of Alexandra on the west bank of the River Manuherikia. The also "The Pigroot " said State Highway 85 runs through the village.

Omakau owes its existence next to the Otago gold rush in no small measure to the Otago Central Railway. As the route of the railway line was extended in the early 20th century from Ranfurly to Clyde, it was decided for reasons of cost against a bridge over the Manuherikia to set a breakpoint in the near, then larger town of Ophir. Instead, they built a train station in Omakau, which led to a significant increase in population.

The railway reached the settlement in 1904 and connected it to the setting of the line in 1990 with the New Zealand rail network. Today, the trail Otago Central Rail Trail, which runs along the former railway line, the place crosses. Some old buildings are reminiscent of the Gold Rush, the city in the image of Ophir is, however, still much more present.
