Huebner Löwenmauleule ( Omphalophana antirrhinii ) is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of cutworms ( Noctuidae ). The German name honors the Augsburg entomologist Jacob Hübner.

Features

Butterfly

The ground color of the fore wings varied in different shades of brown. Ring and kidney blemish are small but clearly marked and usually edged bright, Zapf blemish missing. The inner transverse line is formed double. Very characteristic are the wide überstäubten white veins in Saumfeld. In the Postdiskalregion some black lines are visible. With a wingspan from 26 to 32 millimeters count the imagos of the smaller cutworm species. The hind wings are gray and show a broad, dark Saumfeld. Characteristic are also the sawtooth-like antennae of the males.

Caterpillar, and chrysalis

Adults caterpillars have a greenish color. They have white and yellow back - and side- back lines and yellow side stripes. Typical of the reddish-brown doll are two small peaks at the spatulate cremaster.

Similar Species

The coloring of occurring in eastern Turkey Omphalophana durnalayana sister species tends more to ocher- brown tints, while differ Omphalophana serrata and Omphalophana anatolica by a narrower and more darkened the middle of the forewing.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of Huebner Löwenmauleule includes the countries of southern Europe, parts of Asia Minor and the Middle East and the Alborz Mountains. The species occurs mainly on rocky southern slopes, sandy and dry grasslands or steppes.

Way of life

The moths are diurnal as well as nocturnal. On the day they visit the flowers of various daisy family (Compositae) and come the evening very much like to artificial light sources. They fly in two generations from April to June and July to August. The caterpillars feed preferentially from the flowers and seeds of various snapdragon (Antirrhinum ), toadflax ( Linaria ), Marsh ( Scabiosa ) or dandruff head types ( Cephalaria ). The species overwinters as a pupa.

Endangering

Huebner Löwenmauleule is not native to Germany. Older information about an occurrence in Bavaria are doubtful.
