Omya

Omya AG (until 2000 Plüss -Staufer AG ) based in Oftringen is an internationally active Swiss manufacturer of industrial minerals of calcium carbonate, in particular, fillers and coating pigments. The company is privately owned and employs more than 6,000 people at more than 100 locations in over 50 countries. 2009 Omya generated a turnover of 3.7 billion Swiss francs.

Field of activity

The Group is engaged in the production and sale of minerals from calcium carbonate and the chemical trade with products from international manufacturers. In addition to the corporate headquarters is located in Oftringen also the location of global research for the Omya Group.

The minerals produced by Omya serve as a filler in the manufacture of paper, plastics, paints and coatings, adhesives and construction chemicals in agricultural and environmental engineering. Through the cooperation with international trading partners Omya calcium carbonate also offers chemical raw materials, intermediates and specialties for countless applications.

History

The company was founded in 1884 by Gottfried Plüss as Cement- in Oftringen. His goal was to create Glaziers in best quality and to interest the glass and paint dealer for it. As a result Plüss -Staufer expanded his business with putty on the chalk trade and later to the linseed oil production. For this purpose took Plüss -Staufer 1891 a quarry in Chalons- sur -Marne (France ) and four years later another one in Omey in operation.

In 1894 the company opened its factory in Oftringen, the one followed in 1900 Omey. Opened in 1912 Plüss -Staufer his work in the then part of Germany to Strasbourg. The plants in France and Germany followed in 1925 and 1932, the founding of subsidiaries in Paris and Cologne.

1946, the company expanded to the United States and founded the Pluess -Staufer Co. There they took in 1976 a quarry and an associated factory in operation. 1981 was followed by the start of operations in Australia.

In Austria took over Plüss -Staufer 1975, the majority of Gersheimschen limestone and marble works in 9722 and acquired Gummern Omya 1992 Albogel GmbH, manufacturer of marble grains in 8073 New Pirka. The daughter falls in Unikristall works from Golling in 5440 and 3363 Hausmening calcium carbonate ( PCC slurry ). Participation is Omya on chalk mining in 7052 Mülldorf.

The international expansion accelerated from the 1990s through opening of new quarries and factories in Asia and Latin America, which was followed by another from 2004 in China, Russia, Middle East, Brazil, India, Vietnam and Romania.
