On Hostile Ground

In the depths of death lurks (Original Title: On Hostile Ground ) is an American- Canadian action film directed by Mario Azzopardi in 2000 with John Corbett, Jessica Steen, Brittany Daniel, Andrew Kraulis and Peter Stebbings.

Action

A few days before the Mardi Gras parade breaks on the outskirts of New Orleans, a one sewer manhole through a cave opening and bury a worker among themselves, who carried out a patrol there. The city administration is concerned, because they fear a negative press just before the festivities. The head of the building department, Allison Beauchamp, is tasked to investigate the case. She asks her partner, the geologist Matt Andrews to help, who promised after some hesitation. He worked for many years as an experienced manager of a mine, until it came there to an accident when some of his employees were handling improperly with explosives. Although met him not guilty, he vowed never to work again underground. Nevertheless his partner 's sake, he begins with the investigation - much to the displeasure of the ambitious spokesman Regan, who cares about the event.

Allison begins immediately with the investigations and therefore asks Matt to pick up her cousin Cindy from the city airport. It is many years ago moved away from New Orleans and now on a visit to take part in the festivities. The three spend a first carefree evening in a bar, in which Cindy meets her old friend Dalton, whom she has not seen since childhood. He plays as a musician at the festival and was inducted into the visit. As a gift for Cindy he has organized two courses on one of the floats.

In the meantime, there is a further incident in the city center, almost a woman with her child sinking in in a foxhole. Both come with a fright, but now the question arises whether the parade is canceled. The spokesperson has now received by an employee of the Civil Engineering Office of photos from the French Quarter, which show significant cracks on a building. However, it forwards this information is not further, but destroyed its copies. The Mayor asks Allison, to issue an opinion, which he intends to follow. Regan conceals his knowledge of the impending danger and puts pressure on Allison on. He shows her the consequences if she cancels the festival and get it out with no further incident. Allison bends and recommend to the mayor, to take place the festival. On the basis of this decision is a dispute with Matt, who quickly escalates. Allison accuses him of being too cautious and to strive after the incident at the mine always 100 % certainty that it does not give. This is also the reason why he wanted to still not get married after more than seven years of collaborative relationship.

Matt still continues his studies and discovered in an excavation, a huge cave under the French Quarter, on which the pageant is run. He recognizes that large parts of the city are threatened by an underground Torfbrand. Rain water has flushed out the fire remains and so into large cavities. He sounded the alarm and called on the mayor on the occasion of an emergency meeting to cancel the move. It suggests that fill the resulting cavity with polyurethane, so as to prevent a disaster. The mayor refuses, however, from right to cancel the festival because Matt can not say with certainty whether there will be a further collapse. At the same time he should seal the cavity with the help of styrofoam -like substance.

Cindy and Dalton, meanwhile, prepare prior to their participation in the parade. They dress up as an angel and go left out on one of the cars with. Matte rises again into the cavity and directs the worker to fill with a bore, the polyurethane into the cavity. During his investigations, however, he discovered that under the entire city a much larger cavity is present. He tries in vain to warn the mayor.

The parade begins and shortly thereafter the first cracks show in the bottom of the French Quarter. The floor gives way and some vehicles and adjacent houses are torn into the deep. Cindy and Dalton to run at the last moment in a bar, where they are buried by falling debris. Cindy survived unharmed, while Dalton breaks an arm. Both are at the last minute found and rescued by firefighters. Regan is interviewed by press officers on the incidents. He denies any responsibility to an employee of the Civil Engineering Office again the photos presented. Then, Regan is silent and is cited by a police officer to the mayor.

Matt begins preparations for the filling of the ground, as the way back to him will spill out of the labyrinth of caves and he is trapped. He is pushing to start with the filling, although this would mean his own death. Perforce is the Allison rushed to the scene the signal to make the pumps for the polyurethane. Matt flees from the ascending mass, which expands in the cavities. However, it did lose its tracking device and so believes Allison that he was killed in the mass. Matt can at the last second an explosive charge in a remaining cavity and attach to pave so the way to freedom. Overjoyed are Matt and Allison and Cindy and Dalton reunited. Matt asks Dalton to play at the upcoming wedding of him and Allison.
