One drop rhythm

The One Drop Rockers and Steppers belongs next to the most popular drum rhythms of reggae.

The One Drop gained popularity by Carlton Barrett, the longtime drummer of Bob Marley & The Wailers and The Upsetters. As in the reggae typical drop is also based on a half-time One - meter (also: half -time feel ) in 4/4-time. In this meter the dominant Backbeat shifts by doubling the counting resolution (originally on the second and fourth ) on the third beat. As Offbeat count the days two and four. Essential and eponymous for the One Drop is the omission of the bass drum on the downbeat, ie on the first beat. The bass drum is instead played along with the typically played as Rimclick backbeat on the third beat. The Backbeat is - influenced by the roots of the Calypso - sometimes broken by Clave -like syncopations. The hi-hat is free in the One Drop, but mostly played with accents on the off-beats. Because of its unusual properties, the rhythm is sometimes referred to as " upside down " ( "inside out " or "upside down" ) characterized.

The One Drop is equally playable straight or shuffle rhythm.
