Oneida Lake

The Oneida Lake is a large fish population northeast of the city of Syracuse in upstate New York.

With an area of 199 km ², the Oneida Lake is the largest fully located in New York State waters dar. The lake lies at an altitude of 112 m.

A section of the Erie Canal runs through the lake. The lake is drained by the Oneida River which in turn flows into the Oswego River, which eventually flows to Lake Ontario.

The name is derived from the Iroquois tribe of Oneida, who lived in the area. Although the Oneida Lake is not counted among the so-called Finger Lakes, he is sometimes called the " thumb ".

The lake has an area in east-west direction of 33 km in a north-south direction of 8.7 km. Its average depth is 6.4 m. Its shoreline includes 89 km.

Its narrow depth causes in summer its water temperatures are higher than those of the much deeper Finger Lakes, while freezing in the winter the lake and has a thick layer of ice. This allows for recreational activities such as ice fishing and snowmobiling.

Geology

The Oneida Lake is a remnant of glacial Lake Iroquois Lake, a large prehistoric lake that formed when glaciers today's drain the Great Lakes - the St. Lawrence River - blocked.
