Biography

Nguyễn Phúc Ung KY was a son of Prince Nguyễn Phúc Hồng Cai. Since his uncle, Emperor Tự Đức, no kids got he was adopted and was appointed Duke of Kien Giang. Nevertheless Ung KY not followed after the death of his uncle in 1883 to the throne, but first Duc Đức ( discontinued after three days ), then Hiệp Hòa ( poisoned after four months ), then Kien Phúc ( poisoned after eight months ) and finally Ham Nghi.

On July 4, 1885, however, the Regent Ton That Thuyet kidnapped the young Emperor Ham Nghi of the Forbidden City and took him as a symbolic figure of a resistance movement against the French in the mountains. To revoke Ham Nghi the legitimacy, the French enthroned on September 19, 1885 instead of his Nguyễn Phúc Ung KY as the new emperor, as he chose the Đồng Khánh Ärabezeichnung.

Đồng Khánh was completely under the control of the French and relied on their benevolence. This was immediately apparent: The new Emperor personally went to the representative of France, in order to thank with this for the throne. That was the Vietnamese despicable act, shameful, especially its symbolic character because. The " sublime Yellow Emperor " was the one never to go to anyone itself; People had always come to him, otherwise it as if they were greater than the Emperor seemed. On the other hand, it was for the "Son of Heaven " a shame ( even a foreigner ) to thank someone, to have made him emperor - but it was the only source of his authority the " coat of Heaven" and anyone than towards the sky, he was responsible.

The French Đồng Khánh praised for his cooperation, the Vietnamese condemned him as a collaborator. His troops supported brutal suppression of the freedom of movement of Ham Nghi, his policy was the establishment of the French Union of Indochina legitimacy, which enabled the French even more control over Vietnam.

As Đồng Khánh at the behest of the French, a journey through the country undertook to promote cooperation and obedience, his procession was attacked, he had to flee. The French arranged for his return to Hue, an armed fleet of junks. Since then, they kept him isolated. Đồng Khánh but was in agreement with this order, because he cared more about his personal comfort, as for the welfare of his people. Finally, he got sick, got visions, and died 1889.

After Dong Khanh's death, the French chose none of his very young children to succeed; the next two emperors were descendants of Emperor Duc Đức - but they proved to be uncooperative. The subsequent last two emperors, Khải Định and Bảo Dai, whereas son and grandson Dong Khanh's were. Both Kaiser also cooperated willingly with the French.

The First Lady of South Vietnam, Madame Nhu ( Trần Lê Xuân ( 1924-2011 ), sister in law Ngo Dinh Diem, Ngo Dinh Nhus woman ), was a great-granddaughter of Dong Khanh.
