Onofrio Gabrieli

Onofrio Gabrielli, also Gabrieli, ( born April 2, 1619 Gesso, † September 26, 1706 ) was an Italian Baroque painter in Padua and in Sicily.

Life

He was born in the small town Gesso, 16 km from Messina. He received his first artistic training of the pupil Domenichino Antonio Barbalonga. Even before 1640 he went to Rome in the workshop of the famous fresco painter and architect Pietro Berrettini Baroque, called Pietro da Cortona, and was formed under the classical landscape painter Nicolas Poussin on. Having had gone in 1640 Pietro da Cortona to Florence and Nicolas Poussin in 1641 to Paris, also left Onofrio Gabrielli Rome and went to 1650 to Domenico Maroli, of how he had been trained in Messina at Barbalonga and now lived in Venice and worked. In Veneto Onofrio studied the works of Titian and Veronese. He then went for a long time to Padua, where he, as GB Rossetti, was in the service of the noble Borromeo family. In addition to family portraits and one of his major works, the frescoes in the Villa Borromeo, he created numerous church images in Padua and surroundings.

1660 he returned to Messina, where he made ​​a name as a painter of easel paintings. In addition to his painting, Onofrio devoted to the alchemy that almost cost him his fortune, so he had to create his once precious equipped paintings now more economical, by he completed his images faster and with less material.

During the revolt of Messina against the Spanish repression in 1674, he worked as a military architect and had to flee to France in 1678 after the suppression of the revolt. After he was pardoned by Philip V of Spain, Onofrio 1701 returned back to Messina where he created his late work.

Many of his pictures were lost during the earthquake of 1783 and particularly by the severe earthquake of 1908. In 1983 there was in Gesso a comprehensive exhibition of 20 of his works from Veneto and Sicily.
