Antonio Barbalonga

Antonio Barbalonga or Barbalunga, also called Antonio Alberti, (* 1600 in Messina, † November 2, 1649 ) was an Italian painter of the Baroque.

Life

Barbalonga was a member of the influential noble family Pentadattilo in Messina. He received his first artistic training in his hometown of Giovanni Simone commande ( 1580-1634 ). Later Barbalonga went to Rome in the workshop of Domenico Zampieri, called Domenichino, who was to 1630 in the city on the Tiber and his painting style he adopted. In Rome, he created several church panel paintings and altarpieces. 1633 was Barbalonga member of the Accademia di San Luca.

In the same year he returned to Sicily and unfolded in space Messina a lively artistic activity. Here he founded a school of painting, were trained in the numerous artists. His most important pupils were Giovanni Angelo Canini (1617-1666), Onofrio Gabrielli (1616-1706), Agostino Scilla (1629-1700), Domenico Maroli (1612-1676) and Bartolomeo Tricomi.

His main work from the first time after his return applies the " Conversion of Paul " in the monastery church of S. Anna in Messina. For the public gallery in Messina, he painted a series of pictures that were taken from the Conte di S. Stefano to Spain.
