Ontario Power Generation

Ontario Power Generation ( OPG) is a publicly traded energy company, wholly owned by the provincial government of Ontario. The Ontario Power Generation provides about 70 % of electricity generation in the province of Ontario, Canada. Sources of electricity are nuclear power, hydropower, solar energy, wind energy and fossil fuels. Although the electricity market in Ontario was opened, regulated by the provincial government, as sole shareholder, the price and keeps it below average, to maintain the market price of electricity stable. Since April 1, 2008, the prices are governed by the Ontario Energy Board. The company produces 19,000 megawatts and is one of the major energy suppliers in North America.

History

The company was founded in April 1999 under the then Conservative provincial government under the leadership of Mike Harris. The aim was to deregulate the energy market in the province. The former plans provided for the privatization of parts of the property predecessor company, Ontario Hydro. Ontario Power Generation has been the owner and operator of all Ontario Hydro power plants.
