Opal (apple)

Intersection of Topaz x Golden Delicious

UEB 32642, sold under the brand name Opal is a variety of cultural apple (Malus domestica). The variety was bred in 1999 at the Institute of Experimental Botany of the University of Prague. She comes - as the varieties Luna and Sirius from crossing experiments, the need to combine Kramkheitsresistenz Topaz with yield and flavor of Golden Delicious.

Description

Opal has a sweet and fruity taste, and juice festiges pulp. The flesh is yellowish and fine-to mittelzellig. The skin is yellow to yellow- orange and can be russeting. The fruit is medium- high, and has a fruit shape index (height / width ) of about 0.90.

The tree grows medium high. The branches grow outward, but are close. The fruit wood is short to medium in length.

Cultivation

UEB preferred soil and climatic conditions similar to Golden Delicious. The tree needs vineyard sites. UEB 32642 flourishes abundantly in the middle of the season, and has a low alternation on. The apple is in Europe around the beginning of October and picked, ripe and enjoyable three weeks after harvest.

In the cultivation of UEB 32642 only light thinning seems necessary. UEB 32642 seems resistant to scab and fire blight, which is a clear advantage over Golden Delicious for orchards. The apple bears early yield and has high productivity. The apple is diploid.

History

UEB 32642 since 2005 enjoys patent protection in the U.S. and Europe since 2006 Plant Variety Protection. The variety is marketed as a club variety under the name Opal.
