Opeka Arboretum

The Arboretum Opeka is located in the north of Croatia, about 15 kilometers west of the city of Varaždin, in the town of Vinica. It is one of the three currently existing Croatian arboretums; the other two are Arboretum of Trsteno and Lisičine at Voćin in the west of Slavonia.

The Arboretum Opeka, with an area of 65 hectares, the largest arboretum in Croatia. It surrounds the same name, lying under the wooded mountain Macelj, castle Opeka.

The founder of the arboretum was 1860 Marko Count of Bomb Elles, a world traveler aristocrat. He brought a large number of exotic trees and plants from around the world and built a park around the castle. It remained in the possession of the Bomb Elles family until 1945 and was supervised by the Second World War by state institutions. Today the plant is maintained and driven by the local agricultural and veterinary school.
