Orašac, Croatia

Orašac is a village in the municipality of Dubrovnik in the Croatian Primorje Dubrovnik-Neretva county.

Geographical location

The village is located 15 km north-west of the city of Dubrovnik and is located on the Adriatic highway. The greater part of the village lies on the hill above the road, the smaller below on the coast. Orašac is in two parts: Orašac and Poljice.

History

The village's name is derived from the Croatian word orah (Eng. " walnut " ) and comes along that were grown until the fall of the Republic of Ragusa in Orašac walnut trees. The name Orašac was first mentioned in 1040. At that time the houses were built very close to each other to ensure a good defense against foreign powers. In 1399 Orašac is officially part of the Republic of Ragusa. During the Croatia War the village was occupied by the Yugoslav People's Army and the Chetniks, which have burned almost all the houses.

Economy

The inhabitants of Orašac deal mostly with the tourism in the summer, their main source of income, and with the fishery. End of the 80 years, the hotel Dubrovački Vrtovi sunca was built, which was completely destroyed and burned in Croatia war. Currently the hotel is newly built.
