Orbicule

Ubisch body occur in some pollen grains. They are small (usually less than one micrometer ), spherical structures of sporopollenin, which are formed by the tapetum and sit on the pollen surface. They come especially plants before with a Sekretionstapetum. They come out on the pollen even before the edge of the Sekretionstapetums.

Ubisch bodies were observed in the 19th century isolated. Examined in more detail they have independently of Gerta Ubisch and Lotte Kosmath 1927. John R. Rowley has named them 1963 after Ubisch. Until then, they were called spheroids or orbicules.
