Order of Saint Michael of the Wing

The Order of Saint Michael of the Wing ( Ordem de São Miguel da Ala) is one of the three dynastic Order of the House of Braganza.

History

Led to the creation of the Order of Saint Michael of the Wing were the victories of King Alfonso I in 1147 at Ourique and Santarém concerning the king of León and the Moors. According to legend, the archangel Michael had intervened in the fighting, as his winged arm appeared with the sword in the sky.

The Order was instituted by Pope Alexander III. approved and placed under the Cistercian abbot of Alcobaça.
