Order of San Marino

The Order of San Marino also known as the Order of Saint Marinus, was born on March 15, 1860 by the Grand Council of the Republic of San Marino in two departments - as a civil merit and Military Order of Merit - in memory of the founder of the Republic, the Holy Marinus of Rimini, donated.

He serves as a distinction of services to the state, art, science and "charity" and for military merit. The Order is awarded by the Great Council and the two heads of state, the Captains Regent are the Grand Master of the Order.

Order of classes

The Order has five classes and the statutes of September 27, 1868 limited the number of carriers of each class as follows

  • Grand Cross on 50 carriers
  • Grand Officer on 100 carrier
  • Commander on 200 carrier
  • Officer on 400 Support
  • Knight on 2000 support

Later the order was expanded to a Medal of Merit in three levels ( gold, silver and bronze).

Order decoration

A white enameled goldgerändertes Cross, rounded at the cross arms outwards and the tops covered with small golden balls. In the cross angles is each a golden tower. About the Order sign hangs a golden crown closed; about the support ring, where the ribbon is attached. The medallion shows the obverse the coat of arms of the Republic ( three silver towers on blue background). All around the Civil Order of Merit in gold lettering MERITO CIVILE, the Military Merit Cross MERITO MILITARE. In reverse, the image of the Holy Maurinus is to see and peripherally in the blue frost S. MARINO PROTECTOR. Depending on the Order class, the size of the decoration is fixed.

With the introduction of the second model of the Order both departments have been incorporated and the inscription on the obverse reads MERITO CIVILE E MILITARE.

Ribbon and carrying method

The ribbon is striped in blue four times, and three times in white and the Grand Cross is worn with the sash from the right shoulder to the left hip side. Grand Officers and Commanders wear the Order as neck orders and knights on either the left chest or in his buttonhole. When the officers a rosette is placed on the ribbon.

Grand Cross and Grand Officer of the Order take an additional eight-pointed star, the execution is somewhat smaller in the latter. The Order star has four golden brillantierte bundle of rays in the angles and four just such silver bundle. The latter are additionally equipped with small silver balls. On the Star a white cross of the Order is placed and is encircled by an olive and oak branch. The blue enameled medallion shows the religious motto RELINQUO VOS LIBEROS AB UTROQUE homine.
