Order of Sidonia

The Sidonien Order was founded on December 31, 1870 by King John of Saxony and was primarily intended for those women, who had applied in the Franco-German War of 1870 /71 self-sacrificing way to the wounded soldiers.

The name of the Order is reminiscent of Sidonie of Bohemia (1449-1510), a native of Bohemia, wife of Duke Albrecht of enheartened of Saxony, which was known by special virtue and piety.

Order of classes

The Order, created as a lady north, had only one class.

Order decoration

The medal decoration consists of an eight-pointed white enameled gilt-edged cross of St. John. The round central shield has edged an eight golden wreath and diamonds on the white front is the golden image of the Duchess Sidonia in profile. A blue enamelled circlet surrounding the central shield and standing on it in gold letters SIDONIA. On the back in white medallion -winning Saxon coat of arms in gold. All around a golden oak wreath and Foundation 1870.

There is a clasp that is used simultaneously for ribbon fastening over the top arm of the cross. The golden clasp consists of the royal crown in gold and surmounted a wreath of oak, which is surrounded by a gothic shaped letters S.

Carrying method

The ribbon is purple and both sides by a solid white with green lines stripes.

The Order was created on the left side of the chest, but it was possible to wear it as a sash over his shoulder. The latter carrying method was understood as an increase of the class.

The Order was stored with the associated religious loop / band in a 15 cm wide, 17.5 cm deep and 6 cm high wooden box, which was lined with violet suede bottom and in the lid with a red-brown silk fabric. On the brown -colored lid repeated in a gold embossed the motif crown / gothic "S".
