Order of St. Gregory the Great

The Order of St. Gregory the Great ( short Gregoriusorden or Gregorius Order), officially Ordine Equestre di San Gregorio Magno Pontifical (Pontifical Order of Knights of St. Gregory the Great) is the fourth highest medal for services to the Roman Catholic Church. He is indirectly given by the Pope.

History

The Gregoriusorden, on 1 September 1831 by Pope Gregory XVI. donated to the Brief " Quod Summis quibusque ", is one of the highest honors that gives the Pope to lay persons. Already in 1834 he was generally awarded " for the zeal in defense of the Catholic religion " as the Knights. He was named after Pope Gregory I, who bears the honorary title "the Great" ( pope 590-604 ). During his pontificate, he managed to create through political skill and good management of church property, the basis for the later Papal States. Pope John Paul II renewed on 2 June 1993 the Order; since then the Order will be awarded to women (women).

Order of classes

The Order is divided into two departments, in a civil and military, with the following classes:

  • Grand Cross Knight ( Cavaliere di Gran Croce ) and Grand Cross Dame (Dama di Gran Croce )
  • Commander with Star ( Commendatore con Placca ) and Commander Lady with an asterisk ( Dama di Commendam con Placca )
  • Commander ( Commendatore )
  • Knight ( Cavaliere ) and Dame (Dama )

The winner of the St Gregory enjoy no special privileges.

Order decoration

The insignia show on an eight -pointed golden red enameled cross on the front of the blue shield means the image of Gregory the Great with a dove. On the back is the inscription PRO DEO ET PRINCIPE and in the midst of a golden circle GREGORIUS XVI. P. M. ANNO 1

The Order is worn on a red, yellow -rimmed band. The uniform consists of a dark green, front open dress coat with rich silver embroidery, collar and cuffs of the same color with silver embroidery, dark green pants with silver strips, cocked hat and sword.
