Oregon City-class cruiser

The Oregon City - class was a class of heavy cruiser of the U.S. Navy, which was put into service after the Second World War. The second of the three units was later converted to a guided missile cruiser and was a member of the Albany class.

History

The units of the Oregon City - class cruisers were originally planned as the Baltimore - class, but the design was later revised and changed the orders. All vessels were placed in financial year 1942 in order. It was planned nine units of the class to build, but only three were actually completed, as no need for additional cruisers was more at the end of the Pacific War. The construction of the USS Northampton (CA -125) was set on 11 August 1945, when the ship was ready to 56.2 %. From 1 July 1948, the ship was further built to a completely different design. It was completed as the headquarters or rod ship in time of war could take atombombe also protected the U.S. President and all major command staffs. It was called " National Emergency Command Post Afloat ( NECPA )" ( about: Swimming national headquarters in crises ) and was designated 1953-1970 as CLC -1 in service.

The first unit of the class, Oregon City, was found after only one year out of service, the third, Rochester, remained in service from 1946 to 1961. A special status took the Albany, which was from 1957 converted to a guided missile cruiser and then to 1980 remained in service.

Following the post-1970 removal from the reserve fleet, both units were dismantled, also met the same fate Albany to 1980.

The basic data of the Oregon City - class do not differ from those of the Baltimore class. So the ships were as 205.3 meters long and 21.6 meters wide and displaced up to 17 031 standard tons. The propulsion system and armament remained unchanged.

The only significant difference concerns the structures. To reduce the Topplastigkeit and in favor of a larger air defense Bestreichungswinkels the two chimneys were combined into only one, also the height of the aft superstructure was reduced.
