Orest Khvolson

Orest Danilovich Chwolson (Russian Орест Данилович Хвольсон; * 22.jul / December 4 1852greg in Saint Petersburg, .. † May 11, 1934 in Leningrad) was a Russian physicist and 1920 Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Orest Chwolson graduated in 1873 from the University of St. Petersburg, began teaching there in 1876 and eventually became a professor in 1891. Orest Chwolson wrote a number of works on electricity, magnetism, and photometry. He developed new types of Aktinometern that were used in Russian weather stations for a long time. After 1896 Chwolson devoted mainly to the compilation of his four- volume work " physics textbook " ( Курс физики ), the physics education in Russia vastly improved and universities for many years represented the physical standard work. It was also, French and Spanish translated into German.

Orest Chwolson was awarded the Workers' Red Banner Order. On the Moon, the lunar crater on Chwolson was named after him.
