Oreste Baratieri

Oreste Baratieri ( born November 13, 1841 in Condino, Tyrol; † August 8, 1901 in Sterzing ) was an Italian general.

Born in Tyrol as Baratter, he changed his name first in Barattieri and later in Baratieri. Even as a nineteen year old he fought with Garibaldi in Sicily in 1860, then in 1866 with him in the Tyrol, and then joined the Italian army where he worked his way up to the rank of general.

1891 Baratieri Governor of Eritrea and captured there on July 17, 1894 Kassala. On January 13, 1895, he struck Ras Mengesha Yohannes at Coatit and on January 16 at Senafe. In March he occupied Adigrat. However, when he attacked the advancing Schoaner in the Italian- Ethiopian war after long inaction on 1 March 1896 in the battle of Adua, he suffered a complete defeat. In the subsequent trial, he was acquitted after he had previously been called into question. But in August of that year he took his leave.

Oreste Baratieri died on August 8, 1901 in Sterzing.
