It was on July 1, 2000 by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and King Carl XVI. Opened Gustaf of Sweden. It combines a European road 20 and than railway metropolitan Copenhagen and the Greater Malmö on transnational Oresund Region.

Buildings and Structures

In this 16 km long road and rail link is a tunnel - bridge combination with three main components: the Drogdentunnel, the island Peberholm (Swedish Pepparholm ) and the Öresund Bridge. The project was approved in September 1991. Ground was broken on September 16, 1993. The total construction cost amounted to approximately 2.8 billion euros.

The Oresund connection begins in Copenhagen at Kastrup airport on an artificial peninsula. From there it leads in the world's longest in caisson technique established tunnel, which is 3510 m long and ends on the artificial island Peberholm. The traffic used four tubes: on the south side two railway tubes and on the north side two motorway tubes. Between the road tubes are on the whole length of a technical and a flight corridor.

On the 4055 m long artificial island Peberholm the road and rail traffic runs at ground level and will be a ramp structure of 3014 m in the east followed by Øresund Bridge, a 7845 m long viaduct, the longest with 490 m span cable-stayed bridge in the world for railway and road, threaded. The 3739 m long eastern access ramp binds to the Swedish mainland to the place Lernacken. On the bridges traffic flows double-level, the traffic on the railway network.

In 2002, the Öresund Link received the " Outstanding Structure Award" of the IABSE.

Terms of use for motor vehicles

For the use of the route a toll fee is charged, which is of the order of rates for the ferry. Paying Agent is on the Swedish side. The advantage is a shorter travel time: The Oresund link shortened the travel time between the two cities from 60 to 15 minutes.
