Organic brain syndrome

An Organic Psycho Syndrome ( OPS) is a mental change in the people as a result of organic disease of the brain ( obsolete: also brain organic brain syndrome - HOPS ) or the body in general. Today, we mostly used the term delirium. The OPS is in the WHO classification ICD -10 - not listed - in contrast to the DSM -IV -TR. As organic conditional it is to be distinguished from endogenous, by assessment -related psychosis ( schizophrenia and depression / mania ) and against exogenous, due to external factors induced psychotic disorders. As typically applies the accompanying disturbance of consciousness ( alertness or orientation ), which does not occur with endogenous or exogenous causes. It is necessary to distinguish between acute and chronic OPS.

Acute Organic Psycho Syndrome

Based on the Karl Bonhoeffer 1917 postulated " exogenous reaction types " can be distinguished the following acute organic brain syndromes:

The acute OPS deemed regress, but can go on depending on the cause in a chronic form.

Chronic organic psycho- syndromes

Chronic organic psycho- syndromes may be stable or progressive depending on the cause again. We distinguish the following forms:

  • Organic personality change (also called " personality change " )
  • Dementia
  • Chronic neurasthenes syndrome
  • Local brain psychosyndrome
  • Deficiency Syndromes after coma

Causes

The OPS can be caused by the brain's own as physical illness.

At primary brain diseases occur mainly dementias and other neurodegenerative diseases (eg, atypical Parkinson's syndromes ), as well as epilepsy, brain tumors, encephalitis and craniocerebral trauma.

Physical illness can cause acute triggers have as intoxication (alcohol abuse) or lack of oxygen (hypoxia), but also chronic causes such as derailments of the salt -water balance ( dehydration ), endocrine disorders (hypothyroidism ), metabolic disorders (diabetes, uremia, liver failure).

Treatment

In acute OPS treating the cause comes first. This is crucial for the forecast.

When new-onset chronic OPS should first be considered rehabilitation. Otherwise, only remains the treatment burdensome symptoms, such as depression, hallucinations, or restlessness.

Forecast

Further development depends on the cause. The faster the cause of the injury is resolved, the better the chance for recovery. Particularly clear is to understand the example of the lack of oxygen. Acute it comes quickly to unconsciousness, permanent damage are probably already after a few minutes.
