Orixa japonica is a species of the rue family ( Rutaceae ). She is the only member of the monotypic genus Orixa. Apart from the Germanized word " Orixie " has this kind no German name.

Description

Growth form and leaves

Orixa japonica is a deciduous shrub, the plant height can reach up to 3 meters. The bark is grayish. The alternate, elliptic to inversely egg-shaped, entire, 5-12 cm long and 3-7 cm wide leaves are colored dark green on top and under side lighter. The petiole is 0.5 to 1 cm long. The leaves smell when crushed aromatic. Orixa japonica shows a peculiar phyllotaxis, which is referred to as " Orixa type". The leaf order is as follows: small leaf on left side, large leaf on the left side, small leaf on the right side, large leaf on the right side, etc., with the larger leaves arise rather on top of the horizontally growing shoots and the small leaves rather at the bottom exit ( Bell 1994). In autumn the leaves turn yellow.

Fruit and seeds
