Orphir

Orphir is a municipality on the island of Mainland, Orkney.

Orphir, Old Norse: Jorfjara / Orfjara is to prove since about 1100. It was one of the centers of power to Mainland during the Norman domination over Orkney.

Here was a historic courtyard of the Earls ( Earls Bu) with a hall and a Klickmill ( horizontal water mill). The foundations of the Bu and the water supply from the mill were discovered in 1859.

In the late 11th or early 12th century, the round church of Orphir, which is now in ruins, was built. A later addition of the parish church is no longer well received today.

In Orphir is now the Orkneyinga saga center.
