Orphy Robinson

Orphy Robinson ( born October 13, 1960 in London ) is a British jazz musician (vibraphone, marimba, percussion, composition). He draws eclectically from various sources of jazz and classical music to the radio.

Life and work

Robinson entered the age of fourteen at the Hackney and Islington Youth Band and began under the influence of Roy Ayers to learn vibraphone. He played in the radio band and Savannah approached by Claude depa jazz. The mid-1980s brought him Courtney Pine in his quartet and big band Jazz Warriors. He also appeared with Andy Sheppard and founded his own band; In 1990 he received from Blue Note Records signed a contract for the band Annavas Project, which he directed with Joe Bashorum and with whom he also appeared at the Montreal Jazz Festival. He also toured with Hugh Hopper and also took with Working Week ( Fire on the Mountain, 1989) on. Later he worked (Massive, 2003) even with Jazz Jamaica.

As a composer, he worked for ballet company such as Phoenix Dance as well as for Alexander Balanescu. He also worked as a film composer. He also played with musicians such as Monday Michiru, Don Cherry, Robert Wyatt, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, Lol Coxhill, Butch Morris, Kate Havnevik, Nigel Kennedy and Neneh Cherry. He is also a longtime member of the London Jazz Improvisers Orchestra.

For his work in jazz education, he was nominated in 2009 as Jazz Educator of the Year in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards.
