Oscar Beregi, Sr.

Oszkar Beregi, also Oscar Beregi Sr., ( born January 24, 1876 in Budapest, Austria - Hungary, † October 18, 1965 in Hollywood, California ) was a Hungarian actor of the silent era, which especially in the 20s and 30s of the 20. century in Hungary, Austria, Germany and the United States worked.

Life

Oskar Beregi began his career in 1916 in Austria -Hungary, with a main role in the film " Mire megvénülünk ". There were other silent films in Hungary, until he, like many other Hungarian filmmakers, moved in 1919 to escape from the communist Béla Kun regime with his family to Austria. There he worked among other things on the epic film with The Slave Queen ( 1924).

With the invention and dissemination of sound film (from 1927) its field was limited due to his language skills, and he acted again propagated in Hungarian films, but also played the role of Dr. tree in the Fritz Lang classic The Testament of Dr Mabuse.

During the Third Reich he held in Budapest, where he caused by the anti-Semitic laws in Hungary from 1939 only allowed to occur as a theater actor in Omike, and escaped there organized by Eichmann command Holocaust just barely. He then emigrated to the USA where he makes 1953 in the Oscar-winning film Madame (hi) story appeared in a supporting role.

Oskar Beregi is the father of Oscar Beregi Jr., who also worked as a film and serial actor in the United States.
