Óscar Carmona

António Óscar de Fragoso Carmona [ ɐtɔniw ɔʃkaɾ dɨ fɾɐɣozu kaɾmonɐ ] (* November 24, 1869 in Lisbon, † April 18, 1951 ibid ) was 1926-1951 President of Portugal.

Carmona was trained in the Royal Portuguese Military Academy, from which he graduated in 1888. By 1922 he had risen to the General.

In 1926, Carmona took part in the coup by General Manuel de Oliveira Gomes da Costa who overthrew the Republican government. He was employed as Prime Minister and was given dictatorial powers. In 1928 he settled choose by referendum to the President for life. In 1932 he handed over the affairs of António de Oliveira Salazar, who had been his Finance Minister until then.
