Life and work

He studied classical philology and Protestant Theology at the University of Strasbourg, where he also later taught. From 1938 to 1972 he taught Ancient Church History and New Testament at the University of Basel, which he presided as rector from 1968 to 1972. Cullmann's specialty was the exegesis of the New Testament, the early church and salvation. Deeply committed he was in the sense of ecumenism, by emphasizing the fundamental similarities between the Christian churches and the late 1950s, launched the idea of an ecumenical collection. As Lutherans, he could also teach about Catholic theology without having to conceal its religious origin. He was received at a time when the inter-confessional dialogue was not so far advanced that high-level official contacts were usually of three popes ( Pius XII. , John XXIII. , And Paul VI. ). To Pope Paul VI. entertained Cullmann also a personal friendship. Because of these contacts Karl Barth once said: "On the grave stone of Mr. Cullmann will be ' friend of three popes .'"

Cullmann was active in the World Council of Churches and took personal invitation of the Pontifical Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, Cardinal Augustin Bea and its President as an observer at the Second Vatican Council in part.

Among his students, among others, Rudolf drilling, Lukas Vischer, Felix Christian and Antonio Ambrosianio.
