History

The sand- rich landscape of Osenberge has been shaped by the glaciers of the last ice age ( Weichselian ) by blowouts and washouts. In the Middle Ages and the early modern period led massive destruction of natural resources in the form of centuries of Hudewirtschaft and unregulated timber industry to an extensive Verheidung the Osenberge. Due to the grazing areas by the flocks of sheep, no new forest could develop. Plagge bat in the context of the eternal rye construction as well as for stray recovery led to very poor soils to a formation of large drift sands and training meter high sand dunes. Towards the end of the 18th century resulted in the formation of massive dunes become a threat to agricultural land and settlements. This led in 1803 to a study conducted by the Oldenburg State targeted cultivation of the resulting wasteland of Osenberge, determining the dunes and subsequent reforestation in the form of a pine monoculture. However, this proved in the subsequent period to be very susceptible to wind damage. On November 13, 1972, the holdings were almost completely destroyed by the hurricane Quimburga within a few hours. However, in subsequent years, there was a renewed reforestation taking into account new findings in forestry.
