Oskar Reinhart

Oskar Reinhart ( born June 11, 1885 in Winterthur, † September 16, 1965 ) was a Swiss art collector and patron.

Biography

His father Theodore Reinhart, director of the trading company Volkart Brothers, supported numerous artists, including Ferdinand Hodler, Karl Hofer and Hermann Haller. The love of art was also transmitted to his son, who made ​​the art collection and art promotion to his purpose in life.

He resigned from the family business in 1924 and built a gallery building for its art collection next to the residence, " On Römerholz" in Winterthur. During his lifetime he donated to the city of Winterthur, the works of German, Swiss and Austrian artists of the 18th to the early 20th century, are located since 1951 in the Museum Oskar Reinhart. This collection alone is now home to about 600 works of art.

After his death, the other part of the collection went on as his legacy to the ownership of the Swiss Confederation with the house, " On Römerholz". As one of the most important private collections it houses the former home Reinhart's about 200 major works of the old masters, including Lucas Cranach the Elder, and the French 19th century painting, especially impressionism ( Honoré Daumier, Pierre- Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh and others).
