Osman PazvantoÄŸlu

Osman Pazvantoglu (* around 1758 in Vidin, † 1807 ) was an Ottoman Janissaries and Pasha of Vidin.

Life

Osman Pazvantoglu was born in 1758 in a prestigious Widiner Janitscharenfamilie. His grandfather came from the Vilayet of Bosnia, which is why he is often referred to incorrectly as Bosnians - the family was perhaps Tatar origin. As Janissaries he was, inter alia, also in the service of the Wallachian prince Nicolae Mavrogheni. When the Sultan Selim III. began with far-reaching constitutional reforms, Pazvantoglu led 1794 to a rebellion of the Janissaries. The rebels under Pazvantoglu could temporarily bring an area of Belgrade up to Varna under their control.

An Ottoman punitive expedition under Husein Küçük failed, which, inter alia, for the overthrow and execution of the Wallachian prince Constantine Hangerli led, as it was accused to have the force under Husein Küçük not supported enough. The attempt to extend the rule of the rebels to the entire Belgrade pashalik, failed, the rebels were stopped by Serbian footmen, who were hired by the new Belgrade Pasha Hacı Mustafa.

In order to calm the situation again, Pazvantoglu was amnestied in 1799 and was appointed Pasha of Vidin. Pazvantoglu remained arbitrarily and ruled de facto independently. He led numerous incursions into the standing under Ottoman suzerainty Wallachia, including the looting of Craiova in 1801, when the city was almost completely destroyed. The message in front of an advance on Bucharest Pazvantoğlus prompted the Prince Mihai Sutu to hire Albanian soldiers; Sutu but fled to Transylvania, leaving the city in the reign of terror of those soldiers who were hired for their defense, while in the surrounding Romanian footmen were always powerful. These dangerous and uncertain years coined in the Romanian Sprachchargon the expression de pe Vremea lui Pazvante, in the times Pazvantoğlus, as a symbol of lawlessness and bad government.

Pazvantoglu died 1807 in Vidin. They say he was a good friend of Rigas Velestinlis. Due to internal and external political crises the door against him could not proceed after 1799. From the time of Osman Pazvantoglu numerous military, religious and public buildings are in Vidin receive.
