East and West was a 1901 to 1923, published in German in Berlin publishing house S. Calvary Jewish cultural magazine.

History and content

The magazine, which appeared in the early years with the subtitle Illustrated monthly magazine for modern Judaism, was dedicated to the documentation of artistic, literary, and scientific achievements in the context of the Jewish Renaissance. In the sense of the programmatic title of the journal, especially the assimilated Western Jews were the cultural achievements of the Eastern Jews are taught.

Among the contributors to the magazine included, inter alia, Martin Buber, Ludwig Geiger, Samuel Lublinski, Max Nordau, Binyamin sailing, Alfred Nossig and Martin Philippson.

On the pages of East and West for the first time Yiddish literature was published in German translation and a grösserern audience presented. The transfer was carried out among others by the German Theodor Zlocisti. Another focus of the magazine was the art of criticism. Regularly published discussions of Jewish artists and their work. East and West, the first publication in the field of German-language Jewish press, the photo-mechanical reproductions of works of art and photographs was reprinted.

As the editor of East and West acted Davis Trient and Leo Winz. The double editorship of Trient and Winz however lasted only until the end of 1902. With the founding of the Jewish publishing house, whose CEO Trient was ended cooperation, and Leo Winz took over sole responsibility as an editor and publisher. In 1904 appeared the East and the West in the magazine 's publisher. Because of financial difficulties leased Winz the magazine in 1906 to the ads expedition Haasenstein & Vogler. Between 1907 and 1914 some pages of the magazine were each used by the Alliance Israelite Universelle to publish their releases.

During the years may be considered the most successful of the East and the West before the outbreak of the First World War, he went to the war with the magazine significantly downhill. When in 1923 the German economy collapsed due to hyperinflation, that also meant the end for East and West. The title of the magazine served as the namesake for the 1923 released movie east and west of Sidney Goldin.
